Historical background

Poitou - COUNTY Poitou - ALPHONSE DE FRANCE

(1241-1271)

Alphonse de France (1220-1271) was the son of Louis VIII and Blanche of Castile. By his marriage in 1241 with Joan, daughter of the Count of Toulouse, Raymond VII, he became heir to the coronet. When his stepfather died in 1249, he inherited the county of Toulouse and Marquis of Provence. His brother, Louis IX, gave him the privilege and Poitou County Riom which is to return to the ring in the absence of descendants of Alfonso. Alphonse and his wife Jeanne died eight days apart in 1271. The counties of Poitou, Toulouse, Riom and Marquis of Provence return to the crown in the person of Philip III the Bold.
