POITIERS AND THE POITOU

Franc since the victory of Vouillé in 507, Poitou is governed by the Counts of Poitiers, hereditary since 840 then Dukes of Aquitaine since the end of the 9th century. Through the marriages of Aliénor, the province passed to Louis VII of France then in 1152 to Henri II Plantagenêt. Confiscated in 1203, Poitou became the prerogative of Alphonse, son of Louis VIII. Attached to the Crown in 1271, Poitou was conquered by the Black Prince in 1356. Reconquered by Du Guesclin, Poitou was definitively united to the Crown in 1422.
