Historical background

POEMENIUS

(353)

Coinage in the name of Constantius II

A revolt occurred in Trier at the beginning of the year 353 against Magnentius and Decency. It was led by Poemenius who minted in the name of Constantius and had double maiorina minted in the type of the chrism accosted by the alpha and the omega which are in Greek the first and last letters of the alphabet and recall the words of the Christ "I am the beginning and I am the end". The revolt was apparently crushed quickly. These coins of the Constance type are therefore very rare. It is interesting to find this law of Constantius, who defended the Arian religious theories, on the reverse of this coin rather favorable to the orthodoxy of the Council of Nicaea (325).
