Commentary

This type of drachma, with this hairstyle, is very rare; three or four examples are kept at the BN, one in Nantes and one in Rouen. The only others put up for sale seem to be that of the Cahn sale in 1933 (Saulcy collection), that of the Platt sale of 1988 and those of the Bourgey sales of 1985 and 1987, i.e. around ten examples in total, half of which are in museums. For these drachmas, the Celtic numerary nevertheless lists no less than 40 drachmas (without distinction of hairstyle) including 3 in Bourges, 12 at the BN and 7 in Nantes. Le Nouvel Atlas rightly defends the work of D. Nash on these series; This drachma corresponds to class I “head with classic hairstyle and lapel in the hand”. This type of right constitutes class I \\\"head with classic hairstyle and backhand\\\" of series 1034 \\\"rider and shield\\\". The attribution proposed in the New Atlas is to the Bituriges, as are the drachmas known as \\\"the winged rider of the Pictons\\\". If the attribution to the Pictons is not completely satisfactory for these “horseman and shield” drachmas, attributing everything to the Bituriges seems quite arbitrary to us…

Historical background

PICTONES / BITURIGES - MID-WESTERN, Unspecified

(2nd - 1st century BC)

Many heavy drachmas, with a rider or superimposed horses are difficult to classify. These early coins originate from the confines of Berry and Touraine; often attributed to the Pictons or the Bituriges. If the typology does not make it possible to determine an attribution to such or such people, the distribution of the discoveries is hardly more precise and the conclusions of their metallic analysis are ultimately rather disappointing..
