Historical background

PICARDY - COUNTY OF AMIENS - CITY OF AMIENS

(12th-13th centuries)

Amiens was part of the workshops of Charles II the Bald after the Edict of Pistres. At the beginning of the 11th century, the style of these coins is degenerated and cannot be identified. Coinage became abundant under Philippe d'Alsace, Count of Flanders (after 1161). A. Dieudonné (MNF. op. cit. p.327) recalls that Amiens was ceded to Philippe Auguste by the treaty of March 10, 1186. He opposes the idea that the coin of Amiens was communal and rejects therefore an attribution for the 13th century.
