Historical background

PICARDY - COUNTY OF PONTHIEU - EDWARD I PLANTAGÊNET AND ELEANOR OF CASTILE

(1279-1290)

After the death of Guillaume III (+1221), coinage was interrupted in Ponthieu for more than 50 years. By inheritance, the county passed into the family of Dammartin. In 1251 Joan married Ferdinand III, King of Castile and Leon. Their daughter, Éléonore de Castille, married Edward I of England in 1279. Their son, Edward II, was Count of Ponthieu from 1290 and the county remained English until 1369. It was confiscated by Charles V.
