Historical background

Phrygia - Apamea

(Second - first century BC)

Apamea, located at the crossroads of several important routes of Asia Minor, was founded by Antiochus I (280-261 BC), in memory of his mother, Apama, wife of Seleucus Nicator, the founder of the dynasty Seleucid. The city was located near the source of the Meander. After the peace of Apamea in 188 BC, the city fell under domination Attalid and followed the fate of the kingdom of Pergamum. After 133 BC, it became part of the Roman province of Asia.
