Historical background

PHOENICIA - DORA

(1st - 2nd century AD)

Dora or Dor was the northernmost coastal city of Phenicia, on a small peninsula at the foot of Mount Carmel. Founded around 1400 BC, it fell under the domination of the "People of the Sea" around 1100 BC It was for a time the residence of the Canaanite kings before falling under the domination of Solomon. In 734, it was the capital of an Assyrian province. Controlled for a period by the kings of Sidon, it came under Persian rule around 450 BC. It then came under Seleucid control and was often disputed by the lagid kings. It was fortified by Antiochus III the Great in 219 BC and restored by Antiochus VII Sidetes in 139-138 BC The fortress was restored by Aulus Gabinus.
