Historical background

PHOENICIA - TRIPOLIS

(2nd-1st century BC)

Tripoli of Lebanon, the ancient Tripolis was jointly founded by three of the main cities of Phoenicia: Arados, Sidon and Tyr. It was placed halfway on the coast between Arados and Byblos. The city did not obtain its autonomy until late at the end of the 2nd century BC, in 112-111 BC, although coins are already known from the beginning of the 2nd century BC. The city seems to have remained independent until 84-83 BC the city was conquered by Pompey. In 50 BC, it was under the lagid domination of Cleopatra VII Thea before falling to Marc Antoine in 41-40 BC. After adopting the Pompeian era in 64 BC ., she took the Actian era from 31 BC.
