Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle pour ce type de monnayage sur un flan épais, parfaitement centré des deux côtés avec les grènetis visibles des deux côtés. Très belle galère de haut relief, bien venue à la frappe. Très joli revers de style fin, de haut relief, bien venu à la frappe. Belle patine de médaillier avec des reflets mordorés

Obverse legend : LETTRE PHÉNICIENNE "G" (B).
Obverse description : Galère de guerre voguant à gauche avec une série de rames et ornée d'une rangée de boucliers ; à la poupe, un étendard ; dessous double ligne en zigzag pour figurer les flots ; le tout dans un grènetis circulaire cordonné.

Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Reverse description : Bige au pas à gauche conduit par un aurige, tenant les rênes ; derrière une divinité barbue (ou le Grand Roi), coiffée de la cidaris et vêtue de la candys, levant la main droite ; derrière, marchant, le roi de Sidon (Ba’alshillem II) ; le tout dans un grènetis circulaire cordonné.
Commentary
Cet exemplaire présente au droit au-dessus de la galère, plusieurs traces (cheveux) provenant du coin comme sur l’exemplaire n° 16 de Betylon.
Historical background
PHOENICIA - SIDON
(5th - 4th centuries BC)
Sidon was with Tire one of the main ports of the Phoenician coast, essentially a military port. Sidon was one of the oldest cities in Phenicia. The city was famous for the commercial exploitation of purple (murex). Its coinage seems to have begun in the second half of the 5th century BC and lasted until the Macedonian conquest in 332 BC. The city submitted to the conqueror without a fight, unlike its neighbor, Tyr who resisted for seven months. The new coinage of Sidon began in 112-111 BC Pompey maintained the status of a free city, later confirmed by Marc Antoine. Autonomous coinage ceased in 30/29 BC.
