Commentary


Straton ou Abdastoret, roi de Sidon succéda à Bodashtart vers 370 avant J.-C. Le monnayage de bronze reprend la typologie du monnayage d'argent. Straton portait le surnom de Philhellène, c'est-à-dire l'ami des Grecs. Ce type est frappé à la fin du règne alors que Sidon est révoltée contre le grand Roi.
Straton or Abdastoret, king of Sidon succeeded Bodashtart around 370 BC. The bronze coinage took up the typology of the silver coinage. Straton bore the nickname of Philhellene, that is to say the friend of the Greeks. This type was struck at the end of the reign when Sidon was revolting against the great King

Abdashtart or Strato I

Sidon was with Tire one of the main ports of the Phoenician coast, essentially a military port. The new coinage of Sidon began in 112-111 BC Pompey maintained the status of a free city, later confirmed by Marc Antoine. Autonomous coinage ceased in 30/29 BC.
