Obverse

Obverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.

Obverse description : Tête à gauche, avec mèches frontales arquées et encadrées d'un trait et autres mèches, épaisses ou minces, recourbées au bout ; œil de face très ovalisé ; oreille ; bouche et nez bouletés de deux points chacun ; très fort menton globulaire.

Reverse

Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.

Reverse description : Croix bouletée au centre, formée de quatre cantons : une oreille pointée au 1er, une rouelle à quatre rayons au 2e, une hache évidée tournée à gauche au 3e et un motif indéterminé au 4e canton.

Commentary

Concernant le symbole du quatrième canton, G. Savès proposait une tête d'équidé (?) pour l'exemplaire n° 229 en le rapprochant du motif du n° 225. Sur cet exemplaire, tous les cantons sont particulièrement nets et bien venus, mais son interprétation reste incertaine !
Grande ouverte sur certains exemplaire, la tête d’équidé semble fermée sur cet exemplaire ; la rare drachme au loup S. 235 correspond à ce type de tête !.
Concerning the symbol of the fourth canton, G. Savès proposed an equine head (?) for example no. 229, comparing it to the motif of no. 225. On this example, all the cantons are particularly clear and well-placed, but its interpretation remains uncertain! Wide open on some copies, the equine head seems closed on this example; the rare drachma with the wolf S. 235 corresponds to this type of head!
