PÉTROCORES (near Périgueux)

The Pétrocoriens or Pétrocores whose territory lay between the Dordogne and the Vézère the current Dordogne (Périgord old) had Périgueux capital. They were part of Celtic Gaul and then be attached to Aquitaine. They appear late as Nitiobroges at the final stage of the Gallic Wars. They provided a contingent of 5,000 men to the army of relief. Strabo reported that Pétrocores were very good and metallurgists working iron. Sources: Caesar (Bg. VII, 75, Strabo IV, 2, 2).
