Historical background

PETROCORII (Area of Périgueux)

(1st century BC)

The Petrocores were part of Celtic Gaul and will then be attached to Aquitaine. They are cited in Caesar's comments (VII, 75), at the time of the siege of Alesia where the Petrocores were to provide a contingent of 5,000 men like the Nitiobroges and the Morins. Flamboyant-style drachms have sometimes been attributed to the Arecomic Volques or the Longostaletes. They must be returned to the Petrocores.
