Historical background

PETILLIA

(43 BC) Petillius Capitolinus

In 43 BC, Gaius Pansa and Aulus Hirtius Vibius consuls are January 1, but they will be killed fighting against Antony and trying to clear Decimus Postumius Albinus locked in Mutina. Decimus is then murdered on the orders of Antoine Gaul. Octavian, Caesar's nephew becomes consul suffect twenty years in August. The second triumvirate was formed between Antony, Lepidus, and Octavian in November. Proscriptions are enacted, the first victim was Cicero. A member of the gens Petillia (Petillius Capitolinus), which should not be identified with the monetary triumvir, was accused of stealing the gold crown of the statue of Capitoline Jupiter. He was tried and acquitted because he was a friend of Octavian as Horace (Sat. I, 4. 24) reports.
