Commentary

For this type, Mr. Crawford noted an estimate of 34 straight dies and 45 reverse dies for three varieties. Same reverse die as the copy reproduced in Albert's work (MMR 1543). This denier is in fact much rarer than general works make it appear.

Historical background

PETILLIA

(43 BC)

The Petillia gens is a family of plebeian origin. Petillius Capitolinus, one of its members, who is not to be identified with the monetary triumvir, is accused of stealing the golden crown from the statue of Capitoline Jupiter. He is judged. Being a friend of Octave, he is acquitted, as Horace reports (Sat. I, 4. 24).
