Historical background

PERSIS - KINGDOM OF PERSIS - DARIUS I

(2nd century BC)

La Perside seems to have played an important role in the history of the Achaemenid Empire. Persepolis was one of the capitals of the Empire. La Perside kept a certain autonomy under the Macedonian domination which was perpetuated under the Parthians. The founder of the dynasty seems to have been Bagadate at the end of the 3rd century BC. It seems that Darius I was a contemporary of the Parthian king, Mithradates I (171-138 BC). The descendants of the monarchs of Perside seized the Parthian throne in order to found a new dynasty, the Sassanids.
