Exemplaire sur un flan large, mais ébréché et irrégulier. Usure très importante, mais identifiable et lisible. Patine grise piquée

Obverse description : Tête de Darius à droite, coiffée du bonnet satrapal surmonté d’un croissant.

Reverse description : Autel du feu, richement décoré ; au-dessus Ahura-Mazda ; de chaque côté, le roi à gauche, un oiseau posé sur une enseigne à droite.

Commentary


Poids léger. Revers fortement stylisé. Au droit, l’oreille du monarque à la forme d’une esse. L’exemplaire de MONNAIES XXVIII, n° 84 a été vendu 336€ sur un maximum à 380€.

PERSIS - KINGDOM OF PERSIS - DARIUS I

(2nd century BC)

La Perside seems to have played an important role in the history of the Achaemenid Empire. Persepolis was one of the capitals of the Empire. La Perside kept a certain autonomy under the Macedonian domination which was perpetuated under the Parthians. The founder of the dynasty seems to have been Bagadate at the end of the 3rd century BC. It seems that Darius I was a contemporary of the Parthian king, Mithradates I (171-138 BC). The descendants of the monarchs of Perside seized the Parthian throne in order to found a new dynasty, the Sassanids.
