Historical background

PERSIA - MOZAFFAR ED-DIN SHAH

(1896-1909 - AH 1314-1325)

Mouzaffar ed-Din succeeds Nasir ed-Din. The new shah had to face an insurrectionary movement in 1905 at the time of the first Russian revolution. Demonstrations are taking place in Tehran and the holy city of Koum. Mouzaffar ed-Din is obliged to promulgate a constitution and to convene a parliament in 1906. The Anglo-Russian agreement of 1907 puts an end to the hopes of the progressives. English and Russians divide Persia into distinct zones of influence and support the autocratic policy of Mouzaffar ed-Din. He is trying to dissolve parliament. He was deposed in July 1909.
