PÉRIGORD - COUNTY OF PÉRIGORD - ANONYMOUS

(12th-13th centuries)

The county of Périgord was attributed in 1006 to Hélie II, count of La Marche, by Guillaume V le Grand (990-1029) in order to settle the succession of Adalbert. His other son, Bernard, received the county of La Marche. Perigord coinage could begin at this time. Was the workshop located in Périgueux, La Sale-au-Comte or the Château de Puy-Saint-Front, a century and a half later, as A. Dieudonné indicates (see MNF., P.225) ? The count's coinage did not begin before Hélie VI (1245-1251) with denarii in the name of the count. Previously, we find the reigns of Hélie V de Talleyrand (1166-1205), Archambaud I (1205-1212) and Archambaud II (1212-1245).
