Commentary

This token was extensively copied in Nuremberg by Kilianus Koch. Francis of France (1555-1584), Duke of Alençon and Anjou, was the last son of Henry II and Catherine de Medici. As leader of the Malcontents party, Francis played a particularly important political role in France in the 1570s. He caused unrest at the court of his brother Henry III and participated in the Sixth and Seventh Wars of Religion. As part of the War of Independence against Spain, he was called upon to become the new ruler of the Netherlands. A pretender to Queen Elizabeth I of England from 1572 until her death, he never married. His death on June 10, 1584, in Château-Thierry from tuberculosis allowed Henry of Navarre (the future Henry IV) to become King of France upon the death of Henry III.
