Historical background

NETHERLANDS - UNITED PROVINCES - UTRECHT

(1581-1795)

On 23 January 1579, the five provinces of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelderland and Friesland, called the United Provinces, formed themselves into a federal state in the Union of Utrecht. Overijssel joined the five provinces in the same year, that of Groningen in 1594. In July 1581 members of the northern provinces declared deposed Philip II. In 1795 the French instituted the Batavian Republic which replaced the United Provinces.
