Historical background

NETHERLANDS - UNITED PROVINCES - HOLLAND - WILLIAM V

(1751-1795)

Guillaume V (8/03/1748-9/06/1806) is the son of Stadtholder Guillaume IV (1747-1751) and Anne of England, daughter of George II. Guillaume was appointed Stadtholder at the age of three. Conservative, he relied on the England of his nephew George III and on his brother-in-law, the King of Prussia. He was forced to flee in 1784, but was reinstated two years later. The revolution got the better of William V who had to flee in 1795 when the Batavian republic was proclaimed.
