Burgundian Netherlands - Gelderland DUCHY - PHILIPPE THE BEAUTIFUL

(1482-1506)

Philippe (1478-1506), Duke of Burgundy, Flanders had inherited his mother Mary of Burgundy, who died in 1482. His father, Maximilian of Austria, who administered his possessions until 1494. Artois and Franche-Comté were made in 1493 to Maximilian as Charles VIII had not married his daughter Margaret, but Anne of Brittany. Philip married Joanna the Mad (1479-1555), daughter of the Catholic Kings, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon in 1496. From this union was born in 1500 Charles V and Ferdinand I in 1503. Philippe became King of Spain in 1504, but died in 1506. Jeanne mad, says history, it gained its nickname. The mortal enemy of France, Charles V, would grow to "an empire where the sun never sets".
