Historical background

Parthia - UNITED PARTHIAN - Orodes II

(58-37 BC)

To take power, Orodes II was murdered before his eyes his brother Mithridates III. When Crassus at the head of seven legions crossed the Euphrates without a declaration of war and occupied part of Mesopotamia, Orodes Surena II sent against him. He surrounded the Roman army at Carrhae that retailers lost legions, had 20,000 deaths (including Crassus and his son) and 10,000 prisoners deported in Margiana. The disaster of Carrhae was similar to that of Cannes impact (against Hannibal). He stopped for a time the progress of Rome in the East and the Arsacid empire, without seeking any territorial gain, for two centuries assured its western border on the Euphrates. Surena became a national hero, but also a threat to Orodes who executed him. Depression made by the death of his eldest son Pacorus (killed while he was fighting in Syria) Orodes chooses as his successor the son of a mere concubine, Phraates IV, among the thirty son had left. He made the wrong choice: to prevent any challenge, Phraates IV hastened to murder his father (strangled with his own hands), his brothers and his eldest son!.
