Historical background

Parisii (Paris Region)

(Second - first century BC)

The Parisii were a small but powerful people whose oppidum was Lutèce. Related to Sénons the Parisii and the city would have emancipated their guardianship, relatively late, after the defeat of Arverne 121 BC The wealth of Parisii rested on the river Seine and control of confluence with the Marne Bièvre the Ourcq and the Oise. Caesar chose Lutèce, in 53 BC to convene the meeting of Gauls. The Parisii were among the first to respond to the call of Vercingetorix, the following year, in 52 BC and they provided a contingent of eight thousand men for the army of relief. Monitored by Labienus, friend and legate of Caesar, the territory of the Parisii was the scene of recent fighting which opposed Gauls and Romans. Finally, the chief aulerque Camulogenus was defeated and killed near Lutetia. Caesar (Bg. VI, 3, VII, 4, 34, 57, 75).
