Obverse description : Tête de Junon Sospita à droite, coiffée de la dépouille de chèvre ; derrière, un symbole (?) ; le tout entouré de la stemma.

Reverse

Reverse legend : L. PAPI À L’EXERGUE.

Reverse description : Griffon bondissant à droite ; au-dessous, un autel ; le tout entouré de la stemma.

Reverse translation : “Lucius Papius”, (Lucius Papius).

Commentary

Cette association ne semble pas reprise dans le tableau du British Museum ! Pour ce type, M. Crawford a relevé une estimation de 211 coins de droit et de revers. À chaque symbole de droit est associé un symbole au revers. Il semble étonnant que la représentation au droit de Junon Sospita n’ait pas été librement interprétée par le génie gaulois (RCV. 307). Le revers a inspiré le bronze Pixtilos au griffon (LT. 7078). Le droit se retrouve sur des imitations de deniers de la République (LT. 10103 = BN 10103-10104 et KO. 1015).
This association does not appear to be repeated in the British Museum painting! For this type, Mr. Crawford noted an estimate of 211 obverse and reverse dies. Each obverse symbol is associated with a reverse symbol. It seems surprising that the representation of Juno Sospita on the obverse was not freely interpreted by the Gallic genius (RCV. 307). The reverse inspired the bronze Pixtilos with the griffin (LT. 7078). The obverse is found on imitations of denarii of the Republic (LT. 10103 = BN 10103-10104 and KO. 1015)
