Historical background

PAPAL STATES - GREGORY IX (Hugolino de Anagni)

(21/03/1227-22/08/1241)

Gregory IX was born around 1145 under the name of Hugolin d'Anagni. He succeeded Honorius III and was elected pope on March 19, 1227 before being enthroned two days later. He undertook the Sixth Crusade and excommunicated Emperor Frederick II. After a period of reconciliation, the war with the emperor resumed in 1239. In 1231 he instituted the Inquisition and in 1233 was the author of the bull Vox in Rama describing the sorcerer's sabbath.
