Commentary

En 1526, Charles V (Quint) empreur du Saint-Empire suggère la construction d’un canal pour relier par voie navigable l’Espagne avec l’Équateur et le Pérou. En 1560, une inspection de l’Isthme est réalisée et aboutit à un premier tracé. En 1880, une compagnie française est créée pour construire le canal mais fait faillite. Le projet est repris par les américains. Le canal est finalement ouvert en 1914.
In 1526, Charles V (Quint), Holy Roman Emperor, suggested the construction of a canal to connect Spain with Ecuador and Peru by waterway. In 1560, an inspection of the Isthmus was carried out and resulted in a preliminary route. In 1880, a French company was created to build the canal but went bankrupt. The project was taken over by the Americans. The canal finally opened in 1914.
