Historical background

PAGUS MOSELLENSIS - METTIS - METZ (Moselle)

(7th-8th centuries)

The coinage of Metz is quite rich and the triens bear an epigraphy which makes it easy to follow the succession of the Merovingian kings in this city. Many monetary also left their name on the gold coinage. The silver coinage is much less rich in epigraphy and is limited to types with a few initial letters.
