Historical background

OSTROGOTHIC KINGDOM - ODOVACER

(08/23/476-03/15/493)

Coinage in the name of Zeno

Odoacer, leader of the Heruli, overthrew the last Western emperor, Romulus Augustulus. He sent the imperial vestments back to Constantinople and, in exchange, received the regalia of patrician. After Zeno's death in 491, Odoacer came into conflict with Anastasius and was eventually overthrown and eliminated by Theodoric, another Ostrogoth.
