Historical background

ORLÉANAIS - BISHOPRIC OF ORLÉANS - ANONYMOUS

(From 1025 and first half of the 11th century)

Françoise Dumas thinks that the coinage of Orléans at the end of the 10th and at the beginning of the 11th century is more Episcopal than Viscount. Orleans was directly in the movement of the first Capetians: Hugues Capet (987-996) and Robert II the Pious (996-1031). Daniel Legros gives a list of the bishops of Orléans which includes five bishops between 987 and 1063: Arnoul II (987-1003), Fulk I (1003-1016), Thierry II (1016-1021), Odolric (1021-1033) and Isembard (1033-1063). Anonymous coinage ceases around 1060 when Orléans becomes a royal workshop of Philippe I (1060-1108) (Dy. 50-57).
