Historical background

PRINCIPALITY OF ORANGE - FREDERICK HENRY OF NASSAU

(1625-1647)

Frédéric-Henri (1584-1647) was the youngest son of Guillaume le Taciturne (1533-1584) and his fourth wife Louise de Coligny (1555-1620), married in 1583, daughter of Gaspard de Coligny. Frédéric-Henri is the brother of Philippe-Guillaume (1584-1618) and Maurice (1618-1625). Maurice de Nassau (1567-1625), his half-brother, had a military education and Frédéric-Henri succeeded him as Stadhouder of Holland and Prince of Orange in 1625. Married to Amélie de Solms (1602-1675), he was the father of William II (1616-1650).
