Historical background
NEW HEBRIDES
The New Hebrides, now Vanuatu, is located northeast of New Caledonia. The archipelago was discovered in 1606, it was then visited by Bougainville in 1768 and by Cook who gave it his name. By a Franco-English treaty of October 1882, the archipelago remained neutral and subject to a Franco-British condominium. The archipelago became independent in 1980.
