Historical background

NORWAY - KINGDOM OF NORWAY - HAAKON VII

(1905-1957)

Haakon VII (1872-1957) was the son of Frederick VIII of Denmark and Louise of Sweden. He marries Maud, the daughter of Edward VII. On June 7, 1905, the rupture of the personal union with Sweden was decided and confirmed by plebiscite of the Norwegian people on August 13, 1905. Sweden recognized the independence of Norway and Haakon VII, the son of Frederick VIII of Denmark and grandson of Charles XV of Sweden, becomes constitutional king of Norway.
