Commentary

Lis initial au revers, DUC, les branches latérales de la croix des armoiries sont tombantes. Charles François Frédéric de Montmorency-Luxembourg (1662-1726) est prince d'Aigremont et de Tingry, Duc de Beaufort puis Duc de Piney (Luxembourg). Il est aussi pair de France, marquis de Bellenave, comte de Bouteville, de Dangu et de Lassé, baron de Mello. Il est le fils de François-Henri de Montmorency-Luxembourg (1628-1695), maréchal de France, frère de Christian-Louis, maréchal de France et père de Charles Christian Frédéric, maréchal de France qui accueillit Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Les armes de Montmorency-Luxembourg portent d’or, à la croix de gueules, cantonnée de seize alérions d'azur posés quatre, quatre, quatre et quatre (souvenir de seize bannières ennemies prises au combat) et chargées en cœur d'un écusson de Luxembourg-Piney.

The governments, military and political divisions of the kingdom were twelve in number in the 16th century, they were thirty-nine in 1776, of which eighteen were first class (Picardy, Flanders, Normandy, Lorraine, Burgundy, etc.) and twenty-one second class (Boulonnais, Artois, Berry, Auvergne, etc.). The governors, important figures during the Wars of Religion and sometimes dangerous rivals of power, saw their powers diminished by royalty, in particular by Henri IV or by Richelieu. Louis XIV reduced their exercise to three years and left them only honors, while the intendants exercised the reality of power in the field. The governments nevertheless continued to be transmitted in the great families: Condé in Burgundy, Luxembourg in Normandy, etc..
