Commentary


La Normandie couvre d'une part la région de Rouen ou haute Normandie autour de la vallée de la Seine et d'autre part la basse Normandie autour de Caen avec le Cotentin et le pays d'Auge. Habitée dès le paléolithique, la vallée de la Seine est une importante voie d'échanges et d'habitation, et est ensuite occupée par différents peuples celtiques comme les Calètes, les Véliocasses ou les Aulerques Éburovices. Romaine, elle passe ensuite dans le royaume de Syagrius avant d'être occupée par les Francs dès 486. Ravagée par les incursions des Normands, la région leur est reconnue par Charles le Simple.
Les ducs de Normandie furent ensuite les alliés des premiers Capétiens et sont au XIe siècle à la tête d'un état parmi les plus riches et les mieux organisés administrativement d'Europe ce que montre par ailleurs l'expansion vers l'Italie du sud et l'Angleterre. Dans la monarchie française, la Normandie garde ses institutions, par exemple avec le maintien de l'Échiquier, ou son droit coutumier codifié dans le "Grand Coutumier". Profondément affectée lors des Guerres de religion, la Normandie voit ses derniers vestiges d'indépendance disparaître au XVIIe siècle à la suite des révoltes des "Pieds-nus". L'industrie textile fut favorisée sous Colbert ce qui donna un nouvel essor économique à la Normandie.
