Commentary
Baron d’Arques et fils de Guillaume, vicomte de Joyeuse, Anne est l’un des favoris d’Henri III qui lui donne en mariage Marguerite de Vaudémont-Lorraine, sœur de la reine. Il fait aussi de lui un duc et pair, puis amiral de France et premier gentilhomme de la chambre. Il reçoit en 1583 le gouvernement de Normandie. Chargé de mener la guerre contre les calvinistes en Guyenne, il remporte quelques succès mais il est vaincu et tué le 20 octobre 1587 à Coutras. Ses armes portent écartelées aux 1 et 4 de Joyeuse, palé d’or et d’azur, au chef de gueules chargé de trois hydres d’or et aux 2 et 3 de Saint-Didier, d’azur au lion d’argent, à la bordure de gueules chargée de huit fleurs de lys d’or.
