Historical background

NOGENT-LE-ROI - LORDSHIP OF NOGENT-LE-ROI - ODOLRIC AND ISEMBART DE BROYES

(1022-c.1028)

Isembard (sometimes spelled Isambard) was the brother of Oldoric, Bishop of Orléans and nephew of the Bishop of Beauvais, Roger. Isembard succeeded his brother and had the castle of Nogent restored. Caron tells us that Nogent temporarily bore the undistorted name of "Nogent l'Erambert" of Isembard. His son, Hugues Bardoul, mentioned in a charter of 1028, succeeded his father on an unknown date. Hugues inherited the seigneuries of Nogent and Pithiviers. It was in the castle of the latter that he supported for two years a siege against the King of France Henry I (1031-1060). He finally surrendered in 1044 and was then, it seems, stripped of his fiefdoms.
