NIGER - REPUBLIC - HAMANI DIORI

(1916-1989)

In 1946, Niger became an overseas territory then, in 1958, an autonomous republic within the Community, despite a campaign for the "no" vote in the referendum by the leader sawaba Djibo Bakary, opposed to the head of government Hamani Diori. On August 3, 1960, the country gained independence. Hamani Diori is elected president by the National Assembly. The opposition with Djibo Bakary is getting stronger and stronger. The latter, forced into exile on the eve of independence and who enjoyed the support of the progressive camp, failed in his attempt to seize power..
