On 28 January 2013, during a radio and television address, Queen Beatrix officially announced her decision to abdicate on 30 April 2013 (Queen's Day in the Netherlands) in favour of her eldest son, Prince Willem-Alexander. On the obverse of the commemorative 2 Euro coin, a double portrait of Queen Beatrix and Prince Willem-Alexander recalls the double portrait on the commemorative coins of Queen Beatrix's coronation in 1980 (double portrait of Queens Beatrix and Juliana).
