Historical background

NETHERLANDS - BATAVIAN REPUBLIC

(1795-1806)

In November 1794, the French armies which already occupied Belgium invaded Holland under the command of Pichegru. After Stadtholder William V fled in May 1795, the Northern Netherlands became the Batavian Republic. The provincial coinage remained in force. Napoleon will make it the kingdom of Holland for the benefit of his brother Louis.
