After the murder of Agrippina with Claude by using Locust in 54, 17 years old, he began his reign auspiciously. Helped Seneca, his tutor, and Burrus, prefect of the Praetorium, he governs wisely with the Senate. He married Octavia, daughter of Claudius and Messalina. Brother of Octavia, Britannicus, died in mysterious circumstances in 55 AD (poisoned?). After the "quinquennum aureum" (54-59), the emperor is allowed to murder or his mother. The last nine years of his reign will destabilize the principality.
