Historical background

NEMAUSUS - NÎMES

(1st century BC)

The colony of Nîmes seems to have been founded by Tiberius Nero, the father of Tiberius and Drusus in 45 or 44 BC. The city received the "jus latinum". The coinage must have been struck at the beginning of the 1940s. The obols seem lighter than that of Cavaillon, but correspond well to the standard of the Massaliète coins after 49 BC. As for Cavaillon, it could be of the dedicatory coinage of the foundation of the colony.
