Reverse legend : FERRO ET PERNICIBUS ALIS ; À L'EXERGUE : MARINE 1758.
Reverse description : Calaïs et Zethès armés de glaives et de boucliers, combattant les harpies qui fuient devant eux à gauche.
Reverse translation : Grâce à leur glaive et à leurs ailes rapides.

Commentary


Ces deux fils de Borée accompagnèrent Jason dans sa quête de la Toison d'or où ils le protégèrent des harpies. Tués par Hercule, ils devinrent des vents. Cette illustration est parfaitement indiquée aux temps de la marine à voile. Il est probable que l’iconographie fait allusion aux colonies d’Amérique.
These two sons of Boreas accompanied Jason in his quest for the Golden Fleece, where they protected him from the harpies. Killed by Hercules, they became winds. This illustration is perfectly suited to the age of sailing ships. It is likely that the iconography alludes to the colonies of America.
