Historical background

NAVARRE - KINGDOM OF NAVARRE - JOHN I (II OF ARAGON) AND BLANCHE II

(1425-1441)

Blanche is the second daughter of Charles II of Navarre and Éléonore (+ 1416), daughter of King Henry II of Castile. Her eldest sister, Jeanne, who had married the Count of Foix in 1402, died in 1416. In 1409, Blanche married King Martin I of Sicily, who died in 1409. She remarried King Jean II of Aragon. In 1425, Charles II of Navarre, died without a male heir and the kingdom of Navarre returned to Blanche II. Blanche died in 1441, leaving Jean II of Aragon to reign alone until his death in 1479. Before dying, he had obtained from the King of France the possibility of bequeathing the kingdom of Navarre to his daughter Éléonore who married Gaston IV, Count of Foix.
