Historical background

MOROCCO - HASSAN II

(1961-1999)

Mohammed V died on February 26, 1961. His son Hassan II succeeded him. To respect the promise made to his father to establish a democratic regime within the framework of a constitutional monarchy, the new sovereign had a constitution approved by referendum, on December 7, 1962, establishing a multiparty system and the separation of powers. Parliament's role, however, is relatively limited. That of the king, on the other hand, is very extensive since he appoints the Prime Minister and the ministers, revocable at his discretion. Head of the armed forces, he has the power to proclaim a state of exception if the country is in danger. As "Commander of the Faithful", he is finally the supreme religious leader and ensures respect for Islam.
