Commentary

The lead and silver deposits of Gar-Rouban, near the Moroccan border, were discovered in 1850 and exploited from 1856. At its peak (1860-1862), this mine produced 3000 tonnes of galena (natural lead sulfide) per year but production declined rapidly until the liquidation of the operating company in 1869

Historical background

MINES AND FORGES

The numismatics of the mines was the subject of a study by Jules Florange in 1904. The latter listed the numismatic material relating to the mines: medals, tokens of attendance, tokens of necessity or fiduciary coins, tokens of the superintendents of the mines. Another remarkable work is the work of the Association of Coin Collectors in 1999.
