Commentary

The importance of the mining function is well represented by this prestige token.
This token commemorates the death in 1632 of Antoine de Ruzé, Marquis d'Effiat. He recalls his main titles: Grand Master of Mines (1610), Minister of France (Superintendent of Finances, 1626), Grand Master of Artillery and Marshal of France (the batons overlapping the shield, 1629). The reverse illustrates his position as Grand Master of Mines, clearly the most important in his eyes..
Antoine Coiffier de Ruzé, Marquis d'Effiat (1581-1632) owes his career to his great-uncle Martin Ruzé de Beaulieu, Secretary of State. A skilled courtier, he was superintendent of mines in 1613 and ambassador to Brussels in 1619.. A loyal follower of Richelieu, he became superintendent of finances in 1626. A man of war at the same time, he was at the siege of La Rochelle then in 1630 in Piedmont as lieutenant general. Marshal in 1631, he commanded the army in 1632 with La Force but died of “purple fever” after having entrusted his interests and his son, the future Marquis de Cinq-Mars to the Cardinal. It bears gules, a chevron wavy argent and azure of ten pieces, accompanied by three lion cubs or.
The initial rosette is the mark of Jean Warin

Historical background

MINES AND FORGES

The numismatics of the mines was the subject of a study by Jules Florange in 1904. The latter listed the numismatic material relating to the mines: medals, tokens of attendance, tokens of necessity or fiduciary coins, tokens of the superintendents of the mines. Another remarkable work is the work of the Association of Coin Collectors in 1999.
