Obverse description : Buste du Christ de face, la tête coiffée d’un nimbe crucigère, vêtu du pallium et du colombium, bénissant de la main droite et tenant les Évangiles de la main gauche.
Obverse translation : (Jésus-Christ roi des rois).

Reverse legend : + MIX-AH-L - BASILEYS RM.
Reverse description : Buste de Michel IV de face barbu, couronné, vêtu du loros, tenant de la main droite le labarum bouleté et de la gauche un globe crucigère, couronné par la main de Dieu sortant de la légende.
Reverse translation : (Michel roi des Romains).

Commentary


Au droit, le nimbe crucigère est orné de quatre globules et d’un carré centré dans chacun des bras des trois bras de la croix visibles ainsi que le labarum de Michel IV au revers. Cabochon carré gemmé ; trois globules de chaque côté ; huit globules autour du cou. Pendilia trifoliés aux extrémités bouletées. Ce type, le seul pour Michel IV semble beaucoup plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux.
On the right, the crucigerous nimbus is decorated with four globules and a square centered in each of the arms of the three visible arms of the cross as well as the labarum of Michel IV on the reverse. Gemmed square cabochon; three globules on each side; eight globules around the neck. Pendilia trifoliate with pelleted ends. This type, the only one for Michel IV, seems much rarer than general works suggest.

Michel IV succeeded Romain III and married Zoé, the Empress. His reign was short because he died on his return from a campaign against the Slavs. Zoe, then Michael V succeeded him in 1041/2.
